At the end of World War Two, the US Government compiled a state-by-state listing of the names of all Navy, Marine, and Coast Guard casualties. Included in these entries are the names and addresses of the notified next of kin.
This project maps the addresses for the next of kin of US sub casualties in World War Two. Why do this? I have been doing genealogy and felt this map might provide important leads for people doing their own genealogical research. Also, I think so little time is devoted to thinking about and remembering those left behind. They had to continue on living in spite of their loss (and sometimes losses). This project gives pause to remember them.
The source materials were found on the web. The list of US submarine casualties comes from the website On Eternal Patrol. They have done an excellent job in researching the sailors. The names and addresses for the next of kin comes from the State Summary of War Casualties from World War II for Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Personnel and I harvested the needed information from there to place in the map.
Some of the markers are going to be wrong. Geocoding is not perfect and I have over 3500 markers to verify for accuracy. I have done some of it, but not all of it. Furthermore, some of these addresses no longer exist and the geocoder might have the wrong location. If you notice issues with the markers, please let me know at admin AT quietmist.net.
